Outsource Business ITThe issue of outsourcing is one of the many challenges that will face an organization that is attempting to develop its business information technology. There will be advantages and disadvantages from each perspective and the arguments might end up confusing the decision maker.

Strategic Solutions

Sometimes the company will want to retain control of the project but will simply not have the manpower or the technical knowledge to be able to fully implement the IT project. Alternatively they may be faced with a vast array of potential providers who are each plying their trade and the organization will have a hard time trying to choose the best model or combination of models.

The decision to outsource or otherwise will have serious implications not only for the project itself but for the people who work on the project. For example if you decide to undertake the work in-house, you will need to recruit staff and train them. Resources will be required and there will be opportunity costs for taking employees away from their daily tasks.

You might also be concerned about bias and organizational culture when attempting to bring in a new system. Industrial sabotage is the very extreme manifestations of resistance but it can easily creep into an in-house project. Because the organization is constantly competing with external factors, it will also be important to account for industrial trends. An organization might commission and implement IT system only to realize that by the time it has been fully implemented, the industry has moved on and they are now practically out of date. Producing the project in-house increases the risk of this happening. Thus, the needs for continuous employee training should also be taking into consideration. Technical and computer systems institute, Chicago could be engage for such expertise training for employees. Such training is critical especially for organizations that are looking to build in-house technical team.

business IT projects complianceWhere a decision has been made to outsource there are other risks associated with this decision. Obviously the consultants coming into the business will not have a very deep understanding of how the company works. There is also the risk of conflict between external and internal staff. Consultancy fees can also be high and can cause resentment among in-house staff if they feel that their budgets are being squeezed in order to fund external projects.

The fact that if the outsourcing of IT Service could only a temporary measures, that would means that follow up can be difficult. The systems might require time to embed and there might be technical work that requires the expertise of the outside contractors. The generic problems of outsourcing still apply even within business IT projects. For instance a contract will have to be set and there has to be a system for monitoring and implementing business and operational compliance.

Generally speaking companies will have plenty of discretion to decide whether to outsource business IT projects or to do it within their own organizations. What is important is to understand the merits and demerits of each system. The decision makers can then choose the best option. For some companies outsourcing will yield better results while for others it will yield worse results. So to outsource or not to outsource? It really depends on the needs of the company.
